Not all corporate headshots are photographed from the boardroom nor do they all require a suit or tie. In this post we are out of the studio Constructing a Portrait on location. At times certain headshot or portrait projects call for different themes usually because of the type of career and work environment they’re set in and the client is looking for something unique. The concept of this portrait project was the same but the premise is what separates it from the rest.
This R Four Contracting portrait session allowed us to break from the norm it took us out of the boardroom and onto a construction site. Vancouver’s skyline is constantly changing and R4 has contributed to that change through many of their developments. We’ve done work for R4 in the past designing and creating promotional content for their company including the MNP Tower development in Coal Harbour. Take this link to see the project in further detail.
It’s quite normal for most people to pass construction sites without any notion of the grueling, tedious, stressful and very often dangerous work to build these modern-day castles. There are so many risks involved in this occupation that if not approached with the utmost safety – it could cost one dearly. Seeing the way these guys work gave us an appreciation for their job and it would do the same for anyone else if they saw this job in action.
The fun part of portrait photography is when we capture subjects who don’t usually book photos of this nature. It’s nice to see them respond positively to the good side or look they never thought existed in themselves, where it’s usually complimented with a laugh followed up by kind words. People who are not your typical common corporate portrait are fascinating to photograph. There is a look in the eyes and texture to it all that resonates.
Construction labour is considered ‘brutish work’, well let’s be honest… most find construction work dirty and ‘too tough’ for them to physically handle. People that work construction are a special breed of men and women they wear the title with every ounce of pride on their sleeve. There’s a fascinating exterior about the way they look and carry themselves; the hardened and tough appearances are rich in texture. We had a great time photographing this crew it was great to work with them and we appreciated them looking out for our safety on site as well. Perhaps the next time when you’re looking up at highrise try to remember the hard work and sacrifice that went into it and greet them with a hello. After all we’re just like them except their suit comes with steel toes.
